History & Character

Bergen-Lafayette straddles the ridge between Downtown and the southern neighborhoods, anchored by the historic Bergen Hill — site of the original Dutch settlement of Bergen in 1660, the oldest chartered municipality in New Jersey. Lafayette, the lower section along Communipaw Avenue, was historically an African-American commercial and cultural center. The neighborhood has seen dramatic change in the 2020s, driven by spillover from Downtown's sky-high prices and new development along the light rail corridor. The housing stock is deeply varied: century-old frame houses on narrow lots, mid-rise apartment buildings, industrial conversions, and brand-new condo construction. Liberty State Park, the city's signature green space, occupies the eastern waterfront. Bergen-Lafayette's proximity to both PATH (at Liberty State Park station) and the light rail positions it as one of the city's highest-growth areas.
