History & Character

The West Side covers Jersey City's western flank, bounded by the Heights to the north, Route 440 to the west, and the Hackensack River marshlands. It's one of the most internally diverse areas in the city — Marion and St. Pete are dense residential neighborhoods of pre-war two-and-three-family homes, while Bayside and the West End include newer townhome developments, industrial parcels, and large-scale redevelopment sites along Route 440. Lincoln Park, one of the largest urban parks in Hudson County, anchors the neighborhood. The West Side has historically been among Jersey City's most affordable areas, but rising prices citywide are pushing buyers here. The housing stock skews older, with an average build year in the early 1900s, and the property mix includes more single- and multi-family homes than condos.
