Journal Square is the geographic and civic heart of Jersey City — home to City Hall, the county courthouse, the central library, and the Journal Square Transportation Center, the region's busiest PATH station. Named after the now-defunct Jersey Journal newspaper, the square was the city's commercial center through most of the 20th century before falling into decline. A massive revitalization effort since the 2010s has brought new high-rise residential towers, a renovated Loew's Theatre, and a surge of restaurants and retail. The surrounding residential neighborhoods — St. Aedens, St. Joes, The Island — are classic Jersey City streetscapes of pre-war frame houses on tight lots, now rapidly appreciating as the square's revival radiates outward. Journal Square offers some of the best transit access in the metro area, with direct PATH service to Manhattan and Newark.
